The Story

The O'Brien Performer helped introduce a new era of water skiing. Built in Washington State during the late 1970s to early 1980s, it represents the shift from heavy wooden skis to lighter fiberglass construction, making the sport more accessible while improving performance on the water. Originally sold as part of a "combo" set, the Performer was designed to give new skiers confidence while still allowing them to progress into carving turns and slalom skiing.

Like every vintage ski I use, this one has lived a life before finding its way into the studio. A few scratches, faded graphics, or small signs of use are all part of its story—and once illuminated with LED neon, those little imperfections tend to disappear while the character remains. It's a chance to own a piece of watersports history that's been given an entirely new purpose.

Behind the Performer is the legacy of Herb O'Brien, one of the pioneers of modern watersports. His innovations helped shape the future of water skiing, and he later went on to develop the world's first dedicated water ski testing lake and played a key role in the creation of the modern wakeboard.
