The Ski That Knew What Was Coming

Before powder skis became a fixture on every mountain, "fat skis" were still a pretty radical idea. The Atomic Heli Guide was part of that early revolution, built specifically for deep snow, big lines and heli-skiing.

Atomic's early wide-ski experiments were inspired in part by snowboards, eventually leading to the Fat Boy and Heli Guide designs. By the early '90s, these skis were being used by heli-ski operators throughout British Columbia and helping prove that wider really was better when the snow got deep.

This particular Heli Guide dates to the early 1990s and wears one of the era's unmistakable graphics: black, red, blue and yellow with plenty of '90s Atomic attitude.

Today, its shape doesn't look quite so radical. Back then, it was looking ahead.

Long before fat skis were everywhere, this was one of them.
